McNally Robinson – Night Table Recommendations

McNally Robinson runs a neat series of reviews on their website called Night Table Recommendations. Basically, they ask authors: What books are you reading lately? What’s so good about them? Can you write a little article to share? And if the author says “sure” – BAM! You’ve got a night table recommendation! 😉

My turn to share my night table recommendations came recently, and I got to tell the world about my love for the works of another children’s author: Judy Blume. I’ve been reading her books (again) lately both for research purposes (because to learn how to write well, you need to read great writing!) and for pure enjoyment (because they’re so good!).

No TV? No Fair! – A Number One Bestseller!

Following a terrific launch event at McNally Robinson Booksellers (Winnipeg), my new book “No TV? No Fair!” is their number one bestselling book for young people this week! What a an awesome start for this story!

I want to thank everyone who picked up a copy this week (and told your friends about it, too)! I really hope you enjoy the story and the characters as much as I do (some of my favorite personalities are in this one, for sure!).

Being on McNally’s bestseller list  is a great honour for an author. Icing on an already delicious cake if I may borrow that metaphor for a moment…I certainly hope it means that even more people will come across “No TV? No Fair!” and spend some time with Chloe, Mark and Mr. Z!

No TV? No Fair! – The Launching!

On Sunday, May 16, 2010 “No TV? No Fair!” was officially launched into the universe at McNally Robinson (Winnipeg)! What a kick-off!

Once again, McNally Robinson Booksellers on Grant (Winnipeg) did a fabulous job at putting together a fun and memorable event. A huge thanks to the bookstore and to my publisher Formac Lorimer for sponsoring this amazing book launch!

The launch wouldn’t have been a success without friends, family, and fans (cool – I have fans!) who came out to support me and to learn about the book. Thanks for coming out and being part of a special day. There’s a bit of an amateur actor in me, and as some of you remarked, I like “getting into” my reading. You were a receptive audience for my “performance” and to my delight laughed in all the right places! (phew!)

Now, I hope that you all enjoy those copies of “No TV? No Fair” that you took home – be sure to let me know what you think!

I will now return to dancing on the ceiling for a bit – and then it’s time to get back to writing and dreaming!

School Launch at Constable Finney

I had my very first School Book Launch today for “No TV? No Fair!” with Ms. Williams’s fabulous class at Constable Finney.  It was AWESOME! (There were even mini donut eggs…mmmmmmm…..DONUTS….)

Thanks to this very special class full of budding writers and talents students, and to Ms. Williams to hosting the school launch. You’ve given No TV? No Fair!  a great kick-off.

Sketch written by Karin Adams and Anita Lebeau to premiere at the Carol Shields Festival of New Works

Oooooooooooo!

Now, this is fun!  A short comedic sketch that myself and fellow writer and animator extraordinaire Anita Lebeau collaborated on has been commissioned to appear at The Carol Shields Festival of New Works, May 20-22, 2010. It’s called “The Nerd Helpline” and is about a young woman who, fearing that she is in jeopardy of losing her nerdliness, calls the helpline for a healthy dose of sci-fi trivia. Will she find more than she bargained for…maybe even…love? (or at least, “like”?)

The piece was originally written for a super-fun class that Anita and I took at Prairie Theatre Exchange called (appropriately enough) “Sketch It Out!”. Anita and I even donned our nerdliest wardrobe, and performed the sketch at our end-of-term cabaret (open to the public and everything – yeesh!).

The sketch will be professionally staged (real actors and a real director and everything) several times throughout the festival, including at the Gala Evening kick-off on the Prairie Theatre mainstage on May 20.

We’re so excited!

Morrison Students Help Marvin the Dog

Last week, I was invited to come to Ms. Dutka’s class at R.F. Morrison School as a guest editor. The class is writing a very special book together. This isn’t just any book – it’s a true story of how this remarkable class helped save a starving dog discovered in a Winnipeg back lane and give him a new life. Because they are still working on the book, I won’t give away all the details just yet. I will say that the story is full of caring, compassion, creativity…and candy! (You’ll have to read the book yourself to see what I mean!).

The story is very well-written, with lots of descriptive words, and a very intriguing ending. I was impressed to hear how the students collaborated with each other and their teacher to write each page. They brainstormed, listened to each other’s ideas, took notes, and turned their thoughts into a wonderful story. During my visit, we looked at each page of their first draft. I offered a few suggestions to the class based on the rules that I use to make my own writing shine: Get Creative, Get Sense-sational, and Get Loud. We brainstormed together, and the students came up with some amazing ideas for the final draft!

Well done – I am looking forward to seeing the finished book. I know it’s going to be awesome!
