A Creative Writing Workshop Journey
It’s been a few weeks since the release of The One Week Writing Workshop: 7 Days to Spark, Boost or Revive Your Novel. I’m so grateful for the response so far and for the enthusiastic reviews. Thank you, readers and writers!
When I began offering my creative writing workshop years (and years!) ago, I wasn’t imagining myself ever writing a book about it. You’d think as a writer that the thought might have sprung to mind (well, maybe it flitted briefly in and out). But mostly I remember building up my program bit by bit as I worked with participants, paying attention to what you responded to, to what inspired you, and to the sorts of questions you had.
I’ve written a reflection on my writing workshop method elsewhere—but basically it came down to bringing my authentic, real-world writing activities into classrooms and library halls and conference rooms. That’s what writers were looking for and what had the best chance of sparking something special for them. It wasn’t about inventing a slick system or a gimmick; it was about sharing the things that have worked for me, even when they might look messy or silly to the outside world. The more I brought in what I did day to day in my writing practice, the more my workshop caught on…
In fact, some of my most playful and experimental tactics became staples for other writers. Other times, writers would take something I showed them and modify it to suit their own creative personalities. In fact, it wasn’t unusual for their modifications to bounce back and have an impact on me. I often found myself expanding or reframing my own techniques for the better after being inspired by the writers in my workshop! All this to say, I’m glad I took the plunge to be my authentic creative myself among you, and I thank my participants for doing them same.
This past year has been all about gathering my workshop activities—and that workshop energy!—into a book so that more of you can take part and write the novel you’ve been dreaming of writing. I hope you’ll choose to read the book and really use it. It’s time to write that book, folks! If you do read it—be open to experimenting. Try the things that look familiar, but maybe especially the things that don’t. And don’t hesitate to take my tactics and build on them, transforming them into something unique to you that truly sparks your writing.
All the best as we close out 2024—and…to ongoing creativity in the New Year!
