Word Count Thoughts: Sometimes Less Really is More!
Sometimes we can get overzealous in our descriptions (of setting, of action, of a character’s backstory, etc.). The details are so vivid in our writers’ minds, we want to share it all! The result may be an impressive word count…but…what about the intended impression we hope to make upon our readers?
When revising, it’s wise to step back and ask yourself if a given scene is providing not only the details you’ve imagined, but the impact you’re going for. By impact, I’m talking about things like emotion, tone, suspense, foreshadowing, foreboding…what in the realm of these sorts of things are you hoping your scene will evoke or prompt?
Quite often, a shorter sentence, paragraph, or chapter can be more effective – more impactful – at conveying your vision than writing out “everything I’ve ever imagined when I think of this moment”. It’s not always the case, but definitely worth exploring!
Keep at it, writers!
